Here are four simple steps to building your own blue and green lava lamps.
1.Gather Materials:
A clear glass container, such as a vase or jam jar.
This procedure requires water vegetable oil, food coloring such as green and blue color as well as Alka Seltzer or other Effervescent tablets, and possibly glitter.
2.Fill your container:
Put vegetable oil in the glass jar until it’s about three quarters full. Leave some space over the top.
In another container Mix water with green and blue food coloring until you get the desired hues. Begin by adding several drops and then gradually increase or decrease them depending on the need.
Pour colored water gradually into a glass container that is containing oil. As it falls to the lowest point of the container it will be mixed with it and create a separation.
3. Add Effervescent Tablets:
To add effervescent Alka-Seltzer tablets break the tablet into smaller pieces, then drop each one into oil. Be sure to watch them fall into the water until they reach the bottom.
When exposed to water, the tablet begins to react with the water by creating bubbles which transport colored water up through oil into its center and create the “lava lamp” appearance.
4.Step back and enjoy the Show:
If you want to extend the display, then add Alka-Seltzer Tablets. This will help maintain your reaction speed.
To get the desired effect, experiment with different combinations of food colors, and alter the quantity of Alka-Seltzer tablet in line with the desired effect.
Beware of inhaling the fumes and accidentally consuming Alka-Seltzer Tablets.
Also ensure your container is stable, so it doesn’t fall over easily and then enjoy creating your own blue and green lava lamp!
